FA Cup Round 4 Replay

Birmingham City v Sheffield Wednesday

I have included the third page which has a great photo of Fred Pickering our renown striker who we signed in 1967 for £50,000.

Fred was proudly described as the “most consistent goal-scorer in the 2nd division over the past 3 months“. The editor wasn’t wrong as Pickering had scored in each of the previous 5 games, including the first FA cup game against Wednesday, and a total of 11 in 12 games! He scored in this game too, but I don’t remember much about it, making it 6 in 6 and 12 in 13!

Pickering was a former England international, with his previous team Everton, and scored a total of 32 goals in 88 games for us before moving to Blackpool in the summer.

Interesting fact

In the list of club officials on the right you can just make out Doug Ellis’s name scratched out. Deadly Doug left the Blues’ Board in 1968 to go to you know where but it appears it took a while to change the print run properly!

1967 and all that!

My passion for all things Birmingham City began on a cold grey September Saturday in 1967 when my maternal Grandfather, a lifelong Blues fan, escorted me to my first game at St. Andrews against Millwall FC.

Blues lost the game 3-2, of course, succumbing to a goal from Millwall with the last kick of the game but the die was cast and I was a Bluenose forever, another soul committed to that long, long road!

This site is a small repository of Blues related memories I have collected over the years, some my own and others via my Grandfather.

The first page is a collection of snippets from match day programmes collected some by Grandad Pickering, some by me and a number by both of us!
